What do like about the radio club that we should be sure to keep doing?74 responses
Welcoming to beginners all the way to very experienced veteran hams.
Varied content (radio astronomy talk was great!)
Presentations are a great way to educate members.
I've only attended 1 meeting, but really enjoyed the presentation.
The technical presentations are always of interest to me.
All the educational content
I like all of it, but I like the gatherings/outings and informative meetings the most. I wish I had more time to attend.
Focus on education
Club keeps it simple and focused on Radio. Educational programs.
Community involvement, tech classes
New topics
Free. Good chats. Good meetings. Good people
Exoring new topics as the become available.
Educational talks and connect time
Open to all, including people newer tot he hobby. It's great to see a group of people from Elmer's to people in the classes alltogwther and sharing into and time.
The technical presentations
Technical content
Friendly, All age groups. Not "Clicky". Good support for members. Respect for all members, from members and officers. Fun and enjoyable for all.
Outdoor activities, Educational presentations, free VE testing sessions
Friendliness. Equally open to novice and expert.
Friendly, helpful members. Welcoming to new members. Great at disseminating am. radio information...links to websites and information, great at putting out emails and keeping members aware of ham activities
In general, I love the laid back yet active style. Mentoring opportunities and the short presentations highlighting the many aspects of the hobby.
Weekly net meetings and exam prep classes
'connect time' in a safe positive environment with other folks having like interest sharing best practices and maybe teaming up for joint radio activity
I love the weekly nets, as it is a fun opportunity to get on the air. Although I have only been to 1 meeting so far, it was a very enjoyable experience, and I would very much like to attend another meeting.
Technical updates.
Information is good and very helpful
No dues and excellent content
The monthly technical topics are a great resource
Enthusiastic and helpful people like Rex Ishmael
Focus on education and training. Getting together socially I have made great friendships
Keep on what you are doing.
sponsoring classes for Teck & General Licensing.
meetings, public service events
The camaraderie and technical capability.
In-person events like the one at Fox Run park....Quarterly
talks, informal chat time, elmers
What you are doing is fine
The presentations are, for the most part, pretty good.
I like the presentations at the meetings and the connect time to get to know new people
Focus on education. Friendly and welcoming.
education
Welcoming new people
connecting beginners with experts
classes and testing, tech talks
14er/SOTA
I love the instruction, the comradery, and the ability to learn from the experienced Hams.
Providing information that is pertinent to communications and learning about technology
Monday night with question.
Training, testing for new ratings, and public service.
Emphasis on training & support; especially new hams
On going seminars/classes on ham related topics and new tech.
The Zoom meetings are very effective, please continue.
I like the fellowship time before meetings.
social time; good to meet people in the hobby
Friendly group.
Helping newbies
I like the weekly net. I can't always make it, but enjoy it when i do.
Meetings/Presentations, web-served coordination of activities
I like how active the club is
I enjoyed the presentation, and meeting the members.
Monthly IN PERSON meetings
Weekly net, monthly meeting
Opportunity to learn and practice radio in different formats. Mentorship. Education.
I think the club does a fantastic job of educating and connecting with new people interested in radio. I only wish I had more time to participate more.
Monthly meetings. Net meetings
Presentations
Technical topics; training
active responses to HAM questions, "support" equipment
Education, Events
Monday night nets
In person meetings if possible.
Education focus. Social events.
The people are really friendly and helpful if you ask a specific question. I like the regularity of Monday night net because it forces me to touch my radio once a week. I am excited that this year has brought a lot of new people to the club as old-timers and first-timers. We need to capture the attention and involve the new people or we will lose them.

What about the radio club could be better, including new things the club should be doing?59 responses
More members active participation. Eg more Net Control volunteers.
More technical content
I think two short presentations what be fun and entertaining... there has be be so much talent out there.
Nothing to recommend at this time
I would like there to be club projects of constructing ham equipment from kits or DIY.
Would like to see some more activities in the field. Fox hunting, activations (POTA)
I personally have a hard time attending meetings because I am almost always eating dinner with my family at that time, not a big deal though. I think a roundtable type discussion on VHF/UHF during the day or weekend would be fun for people to discuss what they are doing with radio and ask questions with their peers.
Ramp up the get-on-the-air and hands-on activities
Let me get back to you on that
Shorter meetings
I like the addition of zoom since I travel
N/A
Don't know
With Covid just continue the option to join online via Zoom
Covid has put the lid on; and has limited activities. However hope this next year we will have more activities such as "Antennas In The Park" Bring your step latter.... we will make it into an antenna. <Grin> Simple gatherings. Lets cook a hot dog. Meet for breakfast, drink a beer. Myself I plan to get out more and run portable. More fun if there were more people. Make it very informal. Maybe more interaction with other clubs? I see some of my suggestions are covered further on in the survey Oh well.... <Grin>
More outside activities, smaller breakout workshops
Doing very well by me.
nothing
Perhaps open up opportunities for short, at-home station visits by Elmers to help new Hams and even us older ones with ideas for improvement, hands-on experience, antenna placement, etc.
maybe more discussion about space weather
Formula used on my YTvideos: Entertain, Educate and Inspire in any order that works. The "inspire" part is the hardest! In my videos show'd myself making contacts with DX using low power in a difficult environment sometimes against all odds but having fun and finding the fun in it! It's like that old cereal TV ad where Mikey is having fun gobbling down his Wheaties and the 2-brothers saying "I'll want what Mikey's having"
Be more welcoming to members that are not part of the inner circle provide assistance members on how to setup their radios.
More diverse topics that would help beginners
70% or more of presentations or connect time things should be focused on Technician level "how to" then higher level for the remainder. I don't know how but I think we need to put some focus on new members, getting them to club meetings or to at least attend zoom meetings. I know we have elmering but seems it is not used like it could be and I am sure there is a need, just not sure how we get new hams or non-hams to ask questions and get help? I have been contacted in the past and have several 'new hams" that I periodically work emails with through on things they need answered (that said I may not be the best source but do my best). Maybe the club should have a general email service like Helpme@w0tlm? Many of the questions I get are from some that don't attend meetings, may not even be club members but got my name or email from someone and they feel more comfortable asking "remote". Another items rumbling in my head is just having or trying to setup a ? coffee with or simple gathering to discuss or ? might even be multiple things? I know with covid that is going to be harder to do but a long time ago a group I was in gathered late at a pizza hut for drinks and we could all group up and discuss like the meet and greet. It sure helped me starting out.
Maybe more outdoor POTA or SOTA activations as a group
Small groups for "projects/kits" or training like cw or arduino kits
I can't think of anything to add
increase of club infrastructure; i.e. club house and station, etc
my primary interests are DX and contesting. I would like to see these as special interest groups. Perhaps meet for breakfasts or lunches.
Teaching how to do QSO's properly.
Move the in-person meeting to a different night of the week so every Monday is a net.
Hopefully more in person once Covid is over
More about emergency preparation
We should have more radio related events
I'm not sure, it's pretty good.
More group operating activities. Small, special interest groups.
more programs on operating skills
having a training session on using ColCon and other more advanced features of ham
I greatly enjoy everything the group does. I participate in the nets. My work schedule has been hard to attend the monthly meetings, but that should improve now. I've recruited another new Technician Class license holder to join and he will start attending the meetings with me. I would love it if we could get an Extra class going, but I realize how hard that is. The classes are fantastic. I did both the Technician and General and have tried recruiting people for both. Just keep doing what you are doing!
Alternate meeting locations that allow for more space, allowing more parking and seating
Maybe no Netcontrol - just call sign and monitoring at 7:30PM. Want to say something then Break. A discussion across whatever, not necessarily a particular question. Thus a half hour of talk.
?
After covid is over, more in person events
I'm biased toward Field Day - it's my thing. I'd like to participate in a club-level FD team again.
more teaching time
Not really sure; finding speakers is hard.
Maybe some more events. Perhaps like a transmitter hunt or something like that? Might help get younger folks interested.
I think you all do a good job already and I appreciate you
Consider adding a forum to ask questions- understanding that managing a forum can be a lot of work, so I don't expect it. I've asked questions by email, but I do feel like a pest sometimes.
I'm continually learning, want to have as many learning opportunities as we can
Maybe purchase some reference books and loan them to members?
informal coffee / meal get-togethers
No suggestions
We need more one-on-one, hands-on demos/experience at member's shacks. I would like to just sit and listen and watch for an hour just to see how to operate the equipment. Nets are good but I need to watch experienced people. I purchased a base station six months ago but have not been able to put it together because I don't know how. Even if I did put it together, the practical operating actions are unknown.
Make all meetings virtual for members that are out of area but still wish to attend
More presentations on radio astronomy.
Pretty darn good right now.
Organized outings for portable ops. That is, more on-air activities.
1) WE NEED ELMERS! We have many new people like myself who have just started and don't even know how to set up equipment. There should be a group within the club that focuses on equipment and shack outfitting and installation--you know, the stuff that most of you learned when you were a teenager. We need resources for the members: a useful membership contact list, a list of suppliers of equipment and installation services. I am sure there are people like myself who are willing to pay for installation services. I hate to play the age card, but I can't install an antenna and do all the wiring needed by myself at age 73. 2) WE NEED EXPOSURE TO ACTUAL HAM CONVERSATIONS! Why not have special times or meetings where newbies can visit someone's shack and just listen in for 45 minutes to an hour to learn what goes on and how things are done? Hands on experience knowing which band to use with what equipment. Real focused learning before newbies finally lose interest. I know there are COVID fears but I have put in the time and effort to get my general license, but still have no idea how to actually use a radio. There as so many options for Ham radio it is easy to get overwhelmed and give up. (Which is where I am at). I would love to volunteer to help with the NET but how am I going to learn except to sit next to a person while they are doing it? And how am I going to do it on a handheld? I mean I have a Yaesu FT dx3000 but have no idea how to hook it up or use it. I know it may sound like I am complaining; I am really saying I want to help and contribute but need help myself. I just want to be part of a healthy, active club that brings newer and younger people into the hobby before all us old geezers die off. I have always felt welcome and supported when I needed specific help like programming my handheld. Maybe reaching out this way will connect me with people who know people who are available to teach.

Soldering, oscilloscopes, learning cw,
At this point I'm not sure I have a lot of HAM experience to offer. However, should we find that I have some knowledge in an area of need, I would be open to presenting the material or running a workshop.
I have experience with design and construction of magnetic loop antennas. I could prepare a presentation on this subject if there is enough interest among the club members.

I have little time to donate recently, but possibly UHF/vhf satellite contacts. I have a bag setup for recording audio and tracking the sat as it goes over and wouldn't mind helping someone else dona presentation
none -- but thanks for asking
As you know I'm into digital. Would like to give a "General" presentation on packet. BBS, BPQ32, Winlink, JS8Call. Nothing in depth but an overall to show what fun things that are out there.
Working FM satellites
more into workshops - Hotspots, Digital modes - radios, Remote ops
Radio Astronomy
Fun on 100 watts and a wire, breaking a pile up with patience
logging, ft8 ops,
I don't think I am qualified or experienced to present a workshop.
D-STAR or DMR programming or workshop
learning and operating CW, contesting (CW)
Electrical Soldering
Basic circuit analysis, complex impedance, op amp design.
soldering basics, how to use test equipment
I know nothing...lol
dstar
SDR, satellites, V/UHF antenna design, DSP and MODEMs, RF link budgets
I don't think I know enough about it yet, but I would be willing to help as much as possible
None at the moment
Basic Operation
I have a growing pile of test gear and a basic understanding. I would be the type of presentation where the audience can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or how I could do it better. Time is an issue because I have a young family, but as long as I could plan something a couple of months out.
Raspberry pi general topics and radio related if topics are suggested
I don’t think I’m capable of doing anything like that. I freeze up in front of a group.
I operated ham radio in Russia for 5 years, then Saudi Arabia & Bahrain for three years, contesting and DXing. I can talk about getting a license, station set-up, local hams etc.
HF ANTENNAS
None at the moment.
Present maybe about anything, after June 22.

I like the idea of "trying stuff". For instance right now I'm trying to build an antenna with limited hopes to do NVIS at 25-35 miles away. Little challenges like that are interesting to me. 1

I'd like to participate in person but live in SD & visit my CO daughter occassionally 1

Anything else you want to say about club activities (good, bad, or whatever)?34 responses
As mentioned, I've only attended one meeting, but I'm looking forward to getting to know the club and its members better. I appreciate that there's a large SOTA presence in the club, which is my key interest. However, there are many aspects of HAM that intrigue me and I'd love to learn as much as I can. Thanks for having me last night, I look forward to getting more involved with you guys.
Really enjoy the club and the technical content
We have the opportunity to branch out beyond just the monthly club meeting (in person, via zoom, small groups, etc.)
This is the best general-purpose radio club I've been involved with. Keep doing what you are doing.
The nets have been much better tracked and managed. Thanks Steve!!
Very good
Not really sure how healthy the club is as I've had great difficulty attending meetings, but if participation is low/needing improvement, I'm willing to help.
While I've been unable to attend club events in the last few years I do really appreciate everything the cub and its leadership is doing. Keep up the great work
As indicated "Need More" I think our past Field/Tech days were a "Hit" would like to see them again.
The weekly Net is a good activity. That should definitely continue, even if it is a challenge to get Net Control volunteers
TLM is a unique Club w/it's focus on learning & doing stuff AND balancing learning w/using & doing it. Connect time is very positive aspect mixed with informal show/tell or having a test station ...generating and peaking interest in doing stuff is the tough side of the equation
thanks for being a community resource
Thanks to all the officers and especially Rex, who has given me excellent guidance.
instead of same individuals doing the specific events, think about asking other, ie, training, etc
I enjoy the meetings and the picnic.
The club has plenty of activities, if I count the net and monthly meetings, so we do not need a lot of additional things going on. The dedication of the leadership is outstanding.
I would like to see some field trips, a chance to go see facilities or equipment as a group.
Would like to see people stepping up to share their knowledge (even if only basic) and participate in presentations or small groups.
maybe we should have a cw class
Very nice people
I do not like the Zoom calls. Face to face is the only way to have meetings like that. There is no rise in illness. Look at how many people have to test twice a week for work, with a test that is 95% fraudulently positive. OH MY GOD, CASES ! Bull. If you are not comfortable coming face to face, or you have symptoms, log onto Zoom. We provide both methods for meetings, but we do not force everyone into fear for no reason.
I did not realize how much I would enjoy this hobby, but I really appreciate all that this club has done to help me and my kids get into it. The emails are great. The net is helpful. The instruction is good. It would be nice to record the meetings or the workshops and have them available. They may be. I'll check. If not, that would be helpful.
The club is great. My low level of involvement is not due to the club!
Really appreciate all the work that the leaders (formal and informal) do to make this a great club.
I appreciate knowing that when I finally get my equipment set up and finally get on the air, that if I have any questions or need help, you all are there to support me.
At 49 years old, I'm a little young. I have young kids to time is precious. Warming up to in person meetings may be easier if there were specific topics or conversations in the social times of the meeting. I don't know what that looks like... but I do know I always have lots of questions.
My passion is learning, my radio activities are lower only due to my not having found areas that really draw me, i've dabbled in many radio areas. I do like building electronics, I would like to improve my understanding of propagation so I can put up antennas to get better HF coverage at my home.
Nope
I am a long time hard core contester / DXer. Wish there was more interest / discussion in these areas . . . .
This is a good club. Thank you to all who keep it going.
I think my previous comment said it all. Many of us are new and have no experience operating a radio. Would also like training on personal emergency use of radio. (stuck in blizzard with no cell coverage)
Enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the members both on radio and on Zoom
Love the no membership fee, would be more than happy to give a donation for a PC if needed. Either cash or actually purchasing the PC and donating it to the club. Just let me know.
See previous answer.

Wrap It Up
If you could choose ONE thing for the club to improve on or to focus on, what would that be? 80 responses
Help new hams get on the air. Lots of Elmering.
Encourage an environment of constant learning and improvement
I think we need to think outside the box.... put the challenge out there! What do other clubs do that TOTALLY ROCKS? I imagine there is so much talent within the nembership. I dont know - I new to the club! But look back in your life and remember the fantastic clubs that you belonged to in the past. What made them great?
Nothing at this time
I particularly enjoy the technical presentations but am interested in all aspects of the hobby. I think that the wide variety of the presentations has been well done.
Maybe constraining the length of the presentations? Some of the more technical one’s can drag on.
Member participation is probably the most important thing for any club radio or otherwise. I am guilty of lack of participation. I will try to be more active.
Building the technical knowledge and operating skills of our members
Just keep the quality up. I can't really think of a specific improvement.
Visibility?
Shorter meetings
Can’t think of anything
A more structured process for onboarding new members. There might be one in place, but at the time I didn't "feel" it.
Don't know
Remain open and avaialbe tonall, license or not.
decrease the length of the meeting. It runs a little long at times.
Shorter business meetings
We have a good club and improvements are always on going. I can't think of just ONE thing.
Outdoor Radio Operating Events
Nothing comes to mind.
Getting together in person. Covid makes it a challenge but we need to overcome that and get back to a normal world.
Hands-on (radio) time for new hams to "break the ice" for them.
not sure
Continue to being a welcoming, safe Learning/Doing environment for all ages/types of radio OPs!
I think that there should be more actives besides the club meetings. I really enjoyed the club picnic, and would love to do something like that again. I also really enjoyed the transmitter hunt that my HS teacher offered during his amateur radio club, and although I know the club has offered them, I haven’t attended one. Would love to do that again.
Helping members and new licensees with setting up their radios.
technical, how to do, cables/coax, HF radio selection, heads up on sales, estate sales, etc.
Beginner help
New member focus and help discussions - draw them in, get them active.
Keep communicating. The club does a good job with emails and web page. Keep it up
Just more outdoor activities and gatherings.
Creating an environment to motivate newly licensed hams to get involved and upgrade
How about mentoring new Hams?
Larger Infrastructure.
I'm too new to the club to be sure. I enjoy high tech discussions.
Operational practices.
Participation type events. We have got to get folks out and using their radios, especially new Hams.
Focused topics/training online
Emergency comms
Increasing membership
more participation
More events (operating or special interest groups) outside monthly meetings.
education
A way to bridge the gap.between these ready for elmering and those still getting their feet wet
I can't think of anything
Colcon training
i think you are doing ok now
More technical, less beginner content, but actually pretty good balance there already.
Helping us new Hams understand what we are doing and help us get on the air more. I think that will help us spread the hobby and find new members.
Contacting those that offer to help in a timely manner, I've offered a number of times to hel in areas but have not been contacted
Organize a ZOOM meeting with antenna company mfg to explain their antennas. Or other equipment too. Althought plenty of YOUTUBE Vids out there. I just think the company people would be much smarter and accurate. Some YOUTUBE Vids are just not right.
Public service - and we do some already, I know.
Even more emphasis on new/young ham training; they’re the future
More on UHF/VHF communication for "city dwellers".
Outreach to new members, just to welcome and chat.
how about more mentorships?
The step into HF is a big one, not sure what the club could do, but I'm intrigued.
Maybe more informal activities.
IDK, maybe assigning a buddy (Elmer) to newbies that need more help than usual getting started.
Teach simple items
Inviting people to "try something new"... like NVIS or WinLink or ... I'm not sure. I find the more I discover the more I want to see it working.
geez, increase member volunteering in support of club activities (there are a few of us that are continually more time-giving...)
.
I don’t know
??
I'm interested in in-person, focused seminars on difficult technical topics for Extra Class.
The request for new members to join the W0TLM net in the script is a little confusing. It sounds like new members should call in at that time, but the net controllers don't pause for them to do it. I think it should say something like "when you check in, let us know you are a first time caller so we can welcome you to the group".
continuing focus - patient, continuing education and encouragement for those of us whose careers are not in electronics and communication, but who have interests in utilizing and enjoying amateur radio. The club already does very well with this, by the way.
Mentoring
Covid is over
starting the meeting on an earlier time
Discussion nets (various topics) with access through EchoLink
?still doing webcast of meetings for those whom cannot attend or are out of town..?
Snacks
Pray for the pandemic to be over. However, how we embraced zoom as definitely helped a lot.
All good.
Actual on-air ops.
I have nothing to add
Move the whole operation to Salida so I could attend!
A contact list so members can connect between meetings.

W0TLM is a great club. Activity oriented. Tons of good, capable, friendly hams.
I've QSO'd with several W0TLM club members in the past month as I've started to become SOTA active. The folks I've met have been encouraging and helpful in getting me connected to the community. I appreciate W0TLM and the opportunities you guys are giving the larger community.
Would like to see more activities for new techs. Happy to help. Things like first HT, antenna basics, etc. maybe some field practice (we could even do this in teh parking lot at a connect time).
I think setting up a regular time for people to test their equipment with club members on the air would be fun. Maybe once or twice a month. We could coordinate through a repeater and test on simplex. I personally enjoy the testing and fiddling more than I do actual radio ops. I do enjoy both though.
I've been busy and haven't had time to be involved lately. The online meetings make it easy to attend meetings.
I appreciate keeping I touch with the club, sorry I got bounce from the roster. :(. I’ll do better next time around.
The club is very good
Would love to know the status of the health of the club. You have some amazing leadership /Elmers, but even they get burned out of they have to shoulder all the work all the time.
Safe Covid protocols
W0TLM ROCKS
As a prepper since before they invented the term, my basic interest is in emergency comm. Just being able to stay on the air with friendly club members and recognizing call signs is great by me. I would take a shot at net control but my hands don't work as well as they used to, keeping me from writing fast enough. Thanks for all that the club does.
Surveys are Great Just can't believe there's not a HRO gift cert for taking time to do a survey? LOL
Connect better with members during meetings.
Best club I have been a member of - 1. No dues, 2. Great experts in the club, 3. Very social. Just wish I had the magic wand to get more people involved

I am new to Colorado and am still unpacking. I really enjoy the club and the diversity of its members. I could use some help getting wire antennas in the trees and getting a tower up.
I do not participate in the hobby or the club as much as I thought I would. I have run out of time cycles and have trouble making it a priority. I got the General to see how I would do but I have used it hardly at all. That is my own issue. A lot of the members eat, sleep, and do this hobby in a big way. . I am an outlier, obviously. I totally admire the capabilities of the core group of the club. Their knowledge is amazing!!! I know the club will help me out if I just ask. It is that kind of cordial helpful group.
I would charge for club membership, maybe $5 or $10 a month. Use that money to have more loaner radios/antennas/equipment. That money could also fund food at gatherings.
I haven't been a participant as I am in several ham organizations and run a business.
I like the new president!
Have met a great group of people at monthly meetings.
the club is pretty good in general, but very hard to find a mentor (Elmer) to answer questions. maybe one club person who coords mentors for the group and connects them with newbies. I am in hams for practical (emergency) reasons, looking for training into all the options on how to communicate using my equipment. I know basics but not much more.
You guys are amazing!
Thanks for being there for new hams like me!
I believe name tags would facilitate communications (paper or plastic)
One of the best most beneficial -for time i give- clubs i've ever been part of. Am proud of our educational focus (classes, testing, presentations, etc.)
thank you to all club officers for your service and support
Very much enjoy the weekly net.
Great group of people.
No.
I really like all the people I have met in our club over the past year. They have been genuinely nice and helpful. I would like to become a proficient HAM radio operator and after a year in the club, I haven't really learned or experienced as much as I hoped. I accept that it's my fault for not speaking up enough and being too busy to attend every meeting. I just wish there were more opportunities for new operators to learn and learn correctly so we don't develop bad habits. Thank for this survey and the opportunity to voice my concerns. I honestly don't intend to rant or complain; I wanted to express my perceptions and needs. I appreciate the club officers wanting to improve our club.
